What’s the best time to travel to Mykonos?

The best time to visit Mykonos in Greece depends on what you want to do on the island.

In general, I would recommend going to Greece and its islands in May, June, and September. In these months the weather is great.

It's not too hot outside, but it's already warm enough for a beach day.

Furthermore, Mykonos and the other islands are way more affordable! The hotels and Airbnbs are cheaper and so are the flights to the island.

One of the reasons people love Mykonos is because of the amazing parties and nightlife. The best time for partying on the island is in July and August because then the island is busiest and then there are many great parties with famous DJs.

Nevertheless, in June and September, you will also be able to go to several amazing parties.

How to get to Mykonos?

Mykonos has an airport where you can go to, but you can also get there by ferry.

By ferry

You can go to Mykonos by ferry from Athens and other Greek islands. The best place to buy your tickets is at Ferryhopper.

There are two ports where your ferry can arrive, the old port and the new port. The old port is in the center of Mykonos town, but you will probably arrive at the new port because the large ferries arrive there.

From the new port, it's only about 20 minutes by bus and 10 minutes by sea bus to Mykonos Town.

You will immediately see the bus and waterbus when you arrive at the new port.

Both the bus and sea bus depart regularly. Furthermore, you can take a taxi as well.

By plane

You can also go to Mykonos by plane. Both international flights and domestic flights arrive here.

It's only about 15 minutes by bus from the airport to Mykonos Town. You can also get a taxi or rent a car.

Things to do in Mykonos

Mykonos is an island where you will never get bored because there are so many fun things to do!

1. Visit the windmills

One of the most famous sights in Mykonos is the windmills. You actually see these windmills on every postcard of the island, making it very typical for Mykonos.

In the 16th century, the majority of the windmills were made by the Venetians.

For centuries, the windmills were one of the most important sources of making money for the people who lived in Mykonos and they used them to create flour.

The architecture of the windmills is very beautiful and it's impressive to see the mills in real life.

2. See Little Venice

Little Venice is a place near Mykonos Town that you should see when you're on the island. It's called Little Venice because there are houses that look like buildings in Venice! It's a must-see if you're on the island.

Besides just admiring the beautiful view, you can also go to one of the restaurants in Little Venice and enjoy a meal or something to drink while sitting next to the water.

Little Venice is also a great place for photography in Mykonos. It looks incredible.

The nightlife in Mykonos is very unique and every year thousands of people travel to the island for the nightlife.

With many amazing clubs, bars, and international DJs, it's definitely something you should experience when you're on the island.

Some popular places for nightlife are Super Paradise Beach Club, Cavo Paradiso, and Kalua Beach Bar.

4. Stroll along the typical Greek streets

There are many beautiful streets in Mykonos Town.

You'll find very much flowers here, white houses with blue doors and windows, cobblestones and small alleys.

It's a fun activity to just walk around here and see the beauty of it.

Furthermore, these streets are very photogenic, so if you want to make some amazing pictures, you can do it here!

5. Go to the beach

Mykonos is also famous for the beautiful beaches that are on the island. Therefore, it's a great idea to visit several beaches during your stay in Mykonos.

Some of the best beaches on the island are Psarou Beach, Paradise Beach, Super Paradise Beach, Elia Beach, and Paraga Beach.

6. Go to an epic viewpoint

Mykonos is very beautiful and especially from above it is breathtaking!

There are many amazing viewpoints on the island, but my favorite one is the viewpoint over Mykonos town near 180º Sunset Bar.

What I love so much about this viewpoint is that you see the beautiful white houses that look amazing in combination with the blue water, but at the same time, you also see the traditional windmills.

Here are the exact coordinates of the viewpoint.

7. Visit the Agricultural Museum

The Agricultural Museum is an open-air museum with parts of it in a windmill which is very unique.

The collection of the museum consists of agricultural tools that were used in the past.

Besides the collection, it's also very interesting to see a traditional Greek windmill from the inside.

8. Go Scuba Diving

You can find places to dive all around the island. There are many diving centers and most of these diving centers are located around the more famous beaches.

Whether you are a beginner or a professional, everyone can dive here!

9. Do water sports

Besides scuba diving, you can do many other amazing water sports in Mykonos

For example, you can go water skiing, and surfing.

Especially during summer when the weather is great, it's the perfect time to improve your water sports skills!

10. Go shopping

There are many very nice shops on the island, especially in Mykonos town.

You'll find several well-known brands in Mykonos, such as Louis Vuitton, United Colors of Benetton, and Pandora.

Besides that, there are also many local shops where you can buy typical Greek products.

Moving around in Mykonos

The local bus is the best way to move around the island in Mykonos. It connects Mykonos Town with many parts of the island.

Mykonos Town serves as the hub of the island with two bus stations.

One of them is located next to the old port and one of them is located on the other side of the town. You can easily walk from one to the other.

Also, the buses run regularly and are relatively cheap. during the summer months, buses arrive more frequently. For the bus schedule, check out this page.

Furthermore, there are water taxis on Mykonos. These run in the south of the island along several popular beaches.

The main beach for the water taxis is Platis Gialos.

There are also normal taxis in Mykonos that can take you everywhere on the island.

Moreover, if you want to explore the whole island you can also rent a car.

Where to stay in Mykonos?

I'd recommend staying in Mykonos Town, Ornos or Psarou.

Mykonos Town

Mykonos Town is the place where the most famous sights are. If you want to stay in the heart of Mykonos, you should definitely stay here.

Furthermore, this is also a place with a lot of bars and clubs, so if you're in Mykonos for the nightlife, this is also a convenient area to stay for you.

Here are some of the best hotels in Mykonos Town!

Hotel Alkyon: This is a luxurious hotel in Mykonos Town. It has its own swimming pool and each room has a beautiful view from its private terrace. If you want luxury, go here!

MyCocoon Hostel: If you are looking for a less expensive place to stay, then go here. It is also located in the center of Mykonos Town. You can book a bed in a shared dormitory.

Studios & Suites Rania: For a whole apartment with your own kitchen you should go to this place! It is in the center of the town and has a beautiful garden. I have stayed here myself and I had a great experience here.

Psarou

Psarou is about 4 kilometers from Mykonos Town and it's a lovely area to stay.

Especially if you're in Mykonos for the beaches this is a great place for you, since the famous Psarou Beach is located here. Many celebrities visit this beach.

In summer it can get very busy here leading to waiting lists for the umbrellas and sunbeds on the beach. I've selected two great accommodations in Psarou.

Kensho Psarou: This is a very luxurious place. The architecture of the hotel is very beautiful and typical Greek. Most rooms have their own hot tub and you get a very good breakfast here. However, this is a very expensive place to stay.

Mykonos Azure: For a cheaper place to stay go here! It is a lovely hotel with a beautiful view of the sea.

Ornos

Ornos is a busy beach village that is located in the south of the island and it's about 4 kilometers from Mykonos Town. You can find here a beautiful sand beach.

Also, there are a lot of bars and restaurants. There are many water activities that you can do here, such as scuba diving, water skiing, and surfing.

Moreover, there are many hotels and apartments here where you can stay and it is located very close to Psarou. The following two hotels I selected that are located in Ornos are amazing.

Mykonos Ammos Hotel: This is a very luxurious hotel with direct beach access and very luxurious rooms. Also, there is a pool and a high-quality restaurant.

Marina Blue Ornos: Here you can get your own studio with a kitchen. The studios are within walking distance from the beach of Ornos and they are less expensive than the one above.

Where to have dinner in Mykonos?

The island has many great restaurants that serve very good food. You can find some of the best restaurants below!

Mamalouka

Mamalouka is located in the heart of Mykonos very close to Little Venice.

You can have great dishes from the local and Mediterranean cuisine here.

The restaurant looks amazing and there are lovely spots outside where you can have dinner.

Furthermore, the whole feeling of this restaurant is just perfect. You should definitely check out the menu of Mamalouka.

Ristorante D’Angelo

Ristorante D'Angelo is located very close to the famous windmills and here you can have dishes from the Mediterranean and Italian cuisine.

They serve pizza, pasta, homemade desserts, and much more on the menu.

Furthermore, they have an authentic stone oven for the pizzas.

Jaipur Palace Mykonos

If you want to have some Indian food on the island, then you can go to Jaipur Palace Mykonos.

This is an Indian restaurant located at Paradise Beach.

There is always something for your liking here, because there are many options on the menu.

Furthermore, if you're vegetarian there are options for you as well.

Noa Greek Restaurant

Noa Greek Restaurant is located in Mykonos Town and it's a great place to spend your evening.

There is live music in this restaurant and the place looks very pretty. The menu consists of delicious dishes with amazing desserts, so you should really check it out.
