By Dymphe / January 11, 2023

In this article, you will find 6 free things to do in Vienna. The capital of Austria has free activities that are so much fun, so I'd recommend checking them out!

Table of Contents

  • 1. Film Music festival
  • 2. Vienna State Opera Free Concert
  • 3. St. Stephen’s Cathedral
  • 4. Schönbrunn gardens
  • 5. Go to a free museum
  • 6. Free walking tour

1. Film Music festival

During a period of two months, in June and August, you can view a movie for free right in the middle of Vienna's City Hall Square.

There are over 5000 seats for which admission is completely free! You can find more information about this amazing experience on this website.

2. Vienna State Opera Free Concert

From April to June, you can view a selection of opera and ballet performances on a video screen outside of the opera house while it is played in real-time inside the building.

Five cameras capture each performance, such that you will get a perfect view.

Admission is free. However, there are only 180 seats.

3. St. Stephen’s Cathedral

The St. Stephen's Cathedral is stunning.

The first structure of the church was already completed in 1160. However, major reconstruction and expansion were finished almost 300 years later.

If you have time, you should definitely visit the inside of this church and have a look at the very detailed interior of the building.

4. Schönbrunn gardens

These gardens are the perfect place to relax. The Schönbrunn gardens are located next to the Schönbrunn Palace.

This palace was the primary summer residence of the rulers of the House of Habsburg.

The gardens were created in 1695 and opened to the public around 1779.

Furthermore, the gardens together with the palace can be found on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
