6 Free Things To Do in New Orleans, Louisiana

By Dymphe / January 7, 2023

For 6 free things to do in New Orleans, read this article! Here, I've selected activities you can do without spending anything in this US city.

Table of Contents

  • 1. Go to a free festival
  • 2. See art for free
  • 3. Attend a free walking tour
  • 4. Relax at the park
  • 5. Go to a free museum
  • 6. Listen to free jazz

1. Go to a free festival

For a great free festival in New Orleans, you should definitely see the French Quarter Festival. Going to this festival is a lot of fun.

During this annual festival in spring, you see all kinds of activities relating to food, music, culture, and art of the historic French Quarter neighborhood.

Moreover, you will find here more than 300 musical performances spread over 20 stages and ranging from jazz to folk to gospel.

There is really a lot to enjoy here. Therefore, it's one of the most amazing free things to do in New Orleans!

Most importantly, the festival is free to attend.

2. See art for free

You can see a diverse range of art galleries at both Royal Street and Julia Street.

Here you can browse (local) art for free and it will only cost you anything when you want to buy something.

However, the experience of only seeing the galleries is great in itself!

3. Attend a free walking tour

A free walking tour is one of the best ways to learn more about a city and one of the best free things to do in New Orleans.

During a tour, you will learn about the history and culture at the hand of a local guide.

Tours are completely free, although tipping is recommended. Great free walking tours are provided by Nola Tour Guy and include walks at the French Quarter and Cemetery and the Historic Garden District.

Along the way, you walk by some of the most Instagrammable spots in New Orleans.

4. Relax at the park

Want to relax while in the city? Then a visit to the park might be a great option for you.

At New Orleans City Park you find beautiful nature and it has a size that is about 1.5 times the size of Central Park in New York City.

Also, you will find the largest collection of old living oak trees here, with some being older than 600 years!

Furthermore, you will find many attractions, restaurants and sports facilities in the park.

5. Go to a free museum

Every Thursday Louisiana residents can visit the Ogden Museum of Southern Art for free from 10 AM to 5 PM.

At the museum, you can find the largest collection of Southern art ranging from visual art to music to literature. For more information, check out their website.

However, keep in mind, it's only free for residents!

6. Listen to free jazz

Go to Jazz in the Park for free live jazz music!

During these concert series, you can enjoy great outdoor performances at Louis Armstrong Park, close to the French Quarter.

Every Thursday evening during spring and fall the concerts are held here.

Also, besides just music, you can browse through beautiful art made by local artists here.

But that's not all, you will also find many foods and drink vendors selling local dishes!
