1. Go to the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum

For one of the best museums in Rio de Janeiro go to the Niterói Contempoary Art Museum. You'll find here a large collection of contemporary art that is amazing to see. Moreover, there are about 1200 artworks on display that are all collected by the collector João Sattamini. These works make up the second largest art collection of the contemporary art genre. Besides the artworks, the outside of the building looks a bit like a UFO, which is impressive and also very recognizable.

2. See Christ the Redeemer

The statue of Christ the Redeemer is probably one of the most recognizable sights of Rio de Janeiro. It is a statue of Jesus Christ that stretches his arms. The statue looks very impressive and you have to see it in real life. It is about 30 metres high and is almost 100 years old. Furthermore, it is listed as one of the new 7 wonders of the world.

3. Visit the Aquário Marinho do Rio de Janeiro

The Aquário Marinho do Rio de Janeiro is a very fun aquarium to see. There are many beautiful fish and it is the second largest aquarium in South America. Furthermore, there are almost 5 million litres salt water in which about 8000 fish swim. Animals you find here include the nurse shark, the sand tiger shark and many others. Also, the place has some very special activities. One of these is called "Sleeping in AquaRio" and involves visitors sleeping in a tunnel at the aquarium for one night while the fish swim all around you.

4. Go to Red Beach

One of the best beaches in Rio de Janeiro is Red Beach. This beach is a bit more quiet than the more famous beaches in the city, but it is a really great place to go. You can go here for kayaking, swimming, or doing something else you want to do at the beach! You find the beach next to the cable car leading to the Sugarloaf Mountain (see item below).

5. Go to Sugarloaf Mountain using a cable car

Sugarloaf Mountain is a gigantic mountain in the bay of city. It is almost 400 metres tall! Everywhere in the city you can see it. What's awesome, is that you can go to the top of the mountain using the Sugarloaf Mountain Cable Car! From up there you can have an amazing view over the city! This is really one of the best things to do in Rio de Janeiro!

6. See art at the Rio Art Museum

Another great museum in Rio de Janeiro is the Rio Art Museum! You'll learn here about the history of the city and its culture. Furthermore, there are about 8000 artifacts and thousands of documents.

7. Go to the Escadaria Selarón

The Escadaria Selarón is a beautiful staircase in the city. There are so many colours! Each of the 215 steps is unique and together they form an amazing piece of art by the artist Jorge Selarón. When you are in the city, make sure to check out this place! These steps also make for a great photo opportunity.

8. Explore the Tijuca National Park

Tijuca National Park is a great national park in the city and exploring it is one of the best things to do in Rio de Janeiro. It is a rainforest, and here you'll see the most impressive nature and get the best views over the city!

9. Stroll through the Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro

The botanical garden of Rio de Janeiro is very beautiful to see. There are a lot of different plants and they are organized in an elegant way. Moreover, this is a great place to stroll through and relax a bit while you are doing so.

10. Go to the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes

For another great art museum in Rio de Janeiro go the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes (Portuguese for National Museum of Fine Arts)! You'll find here lots of artworks that were made in Brazil, but there is also plenty to see from other parts of the world. Furthermore, there are paintings, prints, sculptures, and drawings!
