1. Stroll through the Forest Park

Forest Park is more a forest than a park in the middle of the city of Portland.

It is the perfect place for hiking or running as there are many trails you can follow.

Furthermore, it is one of the largest urban forests in the United States.

Also, you can find a large variety of animal species in Forest Park.

Therefore, if you love nature, it is one of the best free things to do in Portland!

2. See a variety of plants

At the Hoyt Arboretum, you can see a large variety of trees and it is really one of the most fun free things to do in Portland!

In fact, there are more than 1000 different types, of which about 60 are considered endangered. You can check out the website of the Arboretum here.

3. Visit a museum for free

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is free to visit every first Friday of the month.

Here you find a collection of art from all over the world. This makes the museum very interesting to visit.

For example, you will find here art from Korea, Japan, Europe, Russia, and many other places.

Also, there are often changing exhibitions.

Therefore, there is always something for your liking! On this page, you find more information relating to the museum.

4. Go to The Grotto

The Grotto is an outdoor shrine and sanctuary.

The location where this can be found is really great. It is completely immersed in nature.

The gardens are beautiful and you will also find many hiking trails here.

Furthermore, during the summer months, there are free tours on Saturdays and Sundays!

5. Go to a free festival

There are several free festivals in Portland that are all great to visit. One of these is the Waterfront Blues Festival.

During this festival in summer, there are lots of musical performances of the blues, soul, roots, and rock genres.

It is a really cool festival, which is very popular and is already happening since 1987. For more information, check out this page!

6. Walk an art walk

Every first Thursday of the month you can participate in the First Thursday Gallery Walk during which many art galleries are open to the public.

You can see many types of art and locals made the art, so this is a great way to experience the local art scene.

Furthermore, there is a lot of music during the art walks! On this page, you can see a list of participating art galleries.

7. See a lot of roses and get a view

At the International Rose Test Garden, you can see and smell thousands of roses.

The roses bloom from April to October. The rose garden is the oldest rose garden in the United States that is still operating.

Also, you can get a view over the city from the International Rose Test Garden which really adds to your experience of the garden. Therefore, it's one of the most beautiful free things to do in Portland!
