1. Do a Gallery Crawl

Every quarter of the year you can participate in the Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District of Pittsburgh.

During this crawl many art galleries open to the public.

You can see here artworks by local and international multimedia artists, live music, dance performances, film screenings, and much more!

2. Tour the city

A walking tour is a great way to experience all the city of Pittsburgh has to offer.

I would recommend the free walking tours by Free Pittsburgh Walking Tours.

During their downtown tour, you will learn more about downtown Pittsburgh at the hand of a local through learning about the stories behind every place.

Although the tours are free, tipping is recommended!

3. Visit the botanical gardens

Another one of the free things to do in Pittsburgh is to visit the Rodef Shalom Biblical Botanical Garden.

It can be visited completely for free during the months of June, July, August, and September.

Here you'll find a large collection of all kinds of plants that once grew in ancient Israel. Therefore, it's especially a great activity if you love nature!

4. Go to a free festival

Every year during April you can go to the Pittsburgh Fringe Festival.

You will find here all kinds of performances such as comedy, theatre, music, dance, puppets, circus, visual arts, and much more!

Furthermore, you can go here without paying anything!

5. Visit the Society for Contemporary Crafts

At the Society for Contemporary Crafts, you can find contemporary crafts art.

For example, the collection includes ceramics, metals, glass, and wood.

Also, you'll find here works from both local artists and international artists.

Since the exhibitions change every year, it's a good activity if you want to experience something new every time you go to Pittsburgh.

6. See art for free

Go to the Frick Art Museum for another great free thing to do in Pittsburgh!

You will find here a great collection of European paintings that include works by Rubens, Boucher, de Marne, and many others.

However, that's not all, because there are also Renaissance and Baroque bronzes and beautiful Chinese porcelains.

7. Listen to free jazz

Every Tuesday taking place at Katz Plaza and at the Backstage Bar is JazzLive!

You can listen here to live jazz music showcasing the best local artists in Pittsburgh!

8. Get a view over the city

There are many hills in Pittsburgh to get a great view over the city, but for one of the best views go to Mt. Washington.

This is the place from where many photos of Pittsburgh are taken, and you can take one too while you are at it!

9. Go to the Allegheny Observatory

The Allegheny Observatory is an astronomical research facility, but you can visit it for free during one of their evening tours.

During a tour, you will learn more about the facility and you will be able to look through the giant telescope.

Therefore, it's a very interesting experience and one of the best free things to do in Pittsburgh. For more information, check out their website here.

10. Move around the city

Using the free light-rail system you can move around four stations in downtown Pittsburgh completely for free! On this page, you'll find more information on how to ride the light rail.

11. Go to the Chatham Arboretum

On the campus of Chatham University, you can go to the Chatham Arboretum.

It features a large variety of trees (more than 100 types), that include a Kentucky coffeetree, maple trees, and river birch. If you like nature, this is very interesting.

12. See a free musical performance

For free musical performances, you can go to the Pittsburgh Banjo Club Performances on Wednesday nights, during which you can listen to great music played on the Banjo (musical instrument).

Furthermore, another great place to listen to free music is at the Pittsburgh Opera during one of their free lunchtime Brown Bag concerts.
