1. National Gallery of Art

The National Gallery of Art has a great collection of paintings, drawings, prints, and many more types of items.

It is one of the best museums in the United States and very popular, only the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has more annual visitors.

Works of, among other famous artists, Rembrandt, Monet, Van Gogh, Manet, Rousseau, and Picasso are featured here.

Furthermore, the museum has no admission fee, which makes this one of the best free things to do in Washington D.C.

2. National Museum of Natural History

The National Museum of Natural History is one of the Smithsonian museums and is one of the most visited museums in the world.

There are almost 150 million specimens of plants, animals, rocks, fossils, and much more, making this the largest collection of natural history in the world.

Some highlights of the museum are the skeleton of an African Bush Elephant, the Hope Diamond (one of the most famous jewels in the world, worth 200 - 350 million dollars), and the dinosaur skeleton hall.

It is truly an impressive museum you should definitely visit! And you can visit it for free!

3. National Museum of African American History and Culture

This museum is also one of the Smithsonian museums. Here you can learn about African-American history and culture through all kinds of items and information.

Examples of items in the museum's collection are a sunken slave ship, garments worn by African-American slaves, and Muhammad Ali's boxing gloves.

You can find more than 3500 objects on display here.

Furthermore, because the National Museum of African American History and Culture is also a Smithsonian museum, you can visit this museum without paying anything.

4. National Museum of American History

The National Museum of American History, also part of the Smithsonian museums and therefore without an entry fee, tells the story of the United States.

Here you can learn about all of the country's history through all kinds of exhibitions.

One of the most notable items in this museum is the original Star-Spangled Banner.

5. National Portrait Gallery

National Portrait Gallery is also a very interesting place to visit.

Here you can find all kinds of portraits of famous United States citizens, including portraits of nearly all American presidents (including the Lansdowne portrait of George Washington), the Founding Fathers of the United States, Charlie Chaplin, Frederick Douglass, and many more.

The National Portrait Gallery also has free entrance because it is part of the Smithsonian museums.
