The 5 Best Museums in Rome to visit

By Dymphe / November 23, 2022

The Eternal City has a lot of museums and I'm going to show which ones are the best museums in Rome! The museums in the capital of Italy are amazing!

That's why you should consider going to one of these museums. Even if you are only going to Rome for a day! And if you are 3 days in Rome or more, you can even go to more.

Table of Contents

  • 1. Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna
  • 2. Galleria Borghese
  • 3. Musei Capitolini
  • 4. MAXXI
  • 5. Vatican Museums

1. Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna

Looking for modern art in the old city? There is a great museum for you!

You can go to the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, a museum focused on modern and contemporary art.

The museum houses more than 1000 paintings and sculptures by, among others, Rodin, Boccioni, Modigliani, Van Gogh, Monet, and Jackson Pollock.

If you like modern art, then this is one of the best museums in Rome for you!

2. Galleria Borghese

Galleria Borghese is a gallery displaying art that was collected by the Roman Borghese Family from the 17th century.

The collection includes works from Caravaggio, Raphael, Bernini, Titian, and Rubens.

The museum is amazing to visit, and the experience is even better when you look at the Villa Borghese gardens adjacent to the museum building, which are beautiful to visit as well.

Furthermore, Galleria Borghese is also part of my 3 days in Rome itinerary. Spending time here is amazing.

3. Musei Capitolini

At the Musei Capitolini, you find a collection of archaeological objects and art from the Renaissance period, including ancient bronze statues, inscriptions, jewels, and coins. So if you like learning about history, this is an amazing place to visit.

Some notable objects include the Capitoline Wolf depicting the legend of the founding of Rome and the statue of Cupid and Psyche.

4. MAXXI

Like the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, you can find contemporary art at MAXXI.

Also, you can find modern architecture here. The building itself is also a modern architectural art piece that makes the museum even better.

Besides just the exhibitions, you can also go here for shows, conferences, and workshops.

5. Vatican Museums

Although the Vatican Museums are technically not in Rome, but in Vatican City. They are definitely worth a visit when you are in Rome and they belong to the best things to do in Rome.

They are one of the largest and most visited museums in the world. In the museums, you can find famous roman sculptures and the most beautiful Renaissance art in the world.

I'd also recommend going to the Sistine Chapel of which the ceiling was painted by Michelangelo. In the museums, you'll find works by Leonardo da Vinci, Bellini, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, and many more famous artists.
