5 Best Museums in New York City, New York

By Dymphe / November 7, 2022

Many museums can be found here, but which ones are the best museums in New York City, United States? I have selected the museums that are worth visiting the most.

From modern art to more ancient history, you can find it all in the city that never sleeps!

Table of Contents

  • 1. The Metropolitan Museum of Art
  • 2. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
  • 3. American Museum of Natural History
  • 4. National September 11 Memorial and Museum
  • 5. Guggenheim Museum

1. The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the United States.

It houses more than 2 million art objects.

Furthermore, it has more than 6 million annual visitors, so it certainly is a popular museum.

You can find here all kinds of art, from ancient Egyptian art to Oceanian art to more modern art. There is so much to see here, so if you can think of it, you can probably find it in this museum.

2. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

This is one of the best museums for modern art in the world. And it is one of the best activities in New York City.

A diverse set of art objects can be found here including paintings, design, prints, and architecture.

Works from Francis Bacon, Salvador Dali, Roy Lichtenstein, Piet Mondrian, Jackson Pollock, and many others are on display here.

If you like modern art, you should definitely not miss this museum when you are in New York City.

And even if you don't like modern art, you should definitely consider going to the Museum of Modern Art, because it is one of the best museums in New York City.

3. American Museum of Natural History

The American Museum of Natural History is one of the largest natural history museums in the world. It's a very impressive place to visit.

The museum holds around 35 million specimens spread across different halls.

A lot of mammals from all continents of the world can be found here, many fossils including dinosaur fossils and mammal fossils are on display, and several meteorites are shown to the public.

However, that is only a subset of all objects, as there is so much more to see.

4. National September 11 Memorial and Museum

Another museum I have included in this list of museums in New York City is the national September 11 Memorial and Museum.

Here you can learn more about the terrorist attacks that happened on 9/11 and see the impact it has had and still has on society.

You can learn about the story of the events that happened through all kinds of objects and information.

5. Guggenheim Museum

In The Guggenheim Museum, you can find a collection of, among other styles, impressionist and contemporary art.

Besides the lovely art in this museum, the building itself is also an artwork, and really enhances your visit to the museum.

Notable works include Alchemy by Jackson Pollock and Morning in the Village by Kazimir Malevich.
